Suriname

General

Suriname

Suriname is a small northeastern coastal country in South America. It has a diverse history of being owned by the French, British and finally the Dutch. November 25th 1975 was the day that Suriname became independent. Suriname has a diversity of ethnic groups. The original population are the Indians. In addition, there are Forest Creoles, Urban Creoles, Chinese, Javanese and Hindustanis living in Suriname. Besides them there are also Lebanese, Jews, and Dutch groups. This is visible in the food and drinks in Suriname. Because of the many ethnic groups there are a lot of national holidays to acknowledge those groups. Most people are living on the coast of Suriname. There are not a lot of people living in the 90% of rainforest, but that is the place to be for a tourist to see the natural habitat of the Indians and different Forest creoles. To take in the beautiful flora and fauna of the country and to relax and breathe in fresh air.
